Installing the Screen Recorder

Before you can use the Screen Recorder for the first time, you must install it.

The following URL: https://som.fuseuniversal.com/* must to be whitelisted, so that the Screen Recorder launcher can be installed and so that the Screen Recorder can be used. If this URL is not whitelisted, it can prevent the use of the Screen Recorder.

The recorder launcher

If you attempt to launch the recorder without installing it, it will fail to launch and you will be prompted to install the launcher. You will be presented with the option of downloading:

  • InstallScreenRecorderLauncher-x.x.dmg (Mac)

  • InstallScreenRecorderLauncher-x.x.exe (Windows).

The recorder launcher is an app that creates the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and is self contained within the app. The risk of running an older version of the JRE is minimised as:

  • We are not running Applets from a browser.

  • We are not using Web Start from a browser.

  • We only make HTTPS connections to known safe servers (your servers).

  • We run in a completely sandboxed environment, where only our code is run (there is no risk of malicious 3rd party Java code).

  • We don't ship a java.exe or any other entry point to use the JRE outside the exe we build, which is hard coded to only run our jar.

Jar files

The jar files and all runtime files are downloaded to the user's AppData folder (if using Windows) or user's Library folder (if using Mac) under a folder called FusionUniversal-V2. In order to download these files, the app requires read/write access to this directory. Any recordings that have not been uploaded or have failed to upload will also be stored in this folder. The recorder launcher also downloads the latest version of the recorder to this directory.

When raising issues or troubleshooting, please provide our Support team with the app-0.log file.

Running the recorder software

The recorder needs to be run from Fuse, as this ensures that the latest version is being used and the target upload path is provided to the recorder.

Common issues

  • If neither you nor the recorder has sufficient write permissions for the AppData folder (Windows) or Library folder (Mac), the recorder will be unable to download the files into the folder and run the recorder successfully.

  • If there is a block on running executable files from the AppData folder (Windows) or Library folder (Mac), the encoder will be unable to run successfully. The recorder will launch correctly, however, the encoding process for videos will fail.

  • Company IT policies or malware protection software can block the above.

  • The following URL: https://som.fuseuniversal.com/* must to be whitelisted, so that the Screen recorder launcher can be installed and so that the Screen Recorder can be used. If this URL is not whitelisted, it can prevent the use of the Screen Recorder.

  • A proxy or firewall might block the ability to upload video files. This means the recorder is unable to connect to Fuse and upload the recorded video to Fuse.
